Testing Psilocybin Mushrooms: Ehrlich Reagent and What You Need to Know
Dried mushrooms are rarely adulterated, but misidentification of species can be fatal. Ehrlich reagent can confirm psilocybin — but there are limits you need to understand.
Testing Mushrooms: What Works and What Does Not
Psilocybin mushrooms are among the safest psychedelics pharmacologically — no deaths have been attributed to psilocybin toxicity alone. The risk comes from misidentification: collecting the wrong species in the wild and consuming a toxic lookalike.
Ehrlich Reagent
Ehrlich turns purple in the presence of psilocybin and psilocin (the active compounds). Test a tiny piece of mushroom cap or stem:
- Purple within 2-5 minutes = indole present, consistent with psilocybin
- No reaction = not a psilocybin-containing mushroom
Limitations
- Ehrlich confirms the presence of indoles — not specifically psilocybin. Other indole-containing compounds (melatonin, 5-HTP) will also turn purple.
- Ehrlich cannot distinguish between psilocybe species.
- Ehrlich cannot tell you potency — mushroom potency varies 10x between species and even between individual fruits from the same flush.
Species Identification
If you are foraging: do not rely on reagent testing alone. Reagent testing confirms chemical presence — it does not identify the mushroom. Positively identifying a mushroom species requires macroscopic features (cap shape, gill attachment, spore color, bruising), habitat, and ideally spore microscopy. Misidentifying a Galerina species (which contains deadly amatoxins) as a Psilocybe can be fatal. If you are not 100% certain of a mushroom's identity, do not consume it.
