Purity Testing at Home: What Reagents Can and Cannot Tell You About Drug Purity

Reagents tell you what is present — not how much. A Marquis reaction that turns purple tells you MDMA is there, not whether the pill is 50mg or 300mg. Here is the reality of at-home purity assessment.

The Purity Myth

One of the most common misunderstandings about reagent testing: "My Marquis test turned dark purple, so my MDMA must be pure."

This is wrong. Reagent tests are qualitative — they detect presence, not quantity. A dark color means the compound is present, not that it is pure. A pill containing 50mg of MDMA and a pill containing 300mg of MDMA will produce the same Marquis reaction.

What Reagents Tell You

  • Presence: The substance produces the expected color → the expected compound (or class of compounds) is likely present
  • Absence: No reaction or the wrong color → the expected compound is likely not present, or is present below detection threshold
  • Adulteration: An unexpected secondary color or color progression → another compound class may be present

What Reagents Do Not Tell You

  • Purity (percentage) — reagents cannot quantify
  • Dose (milligrams) — reagents cannot tell you if a pill contains 50mg or 300mg
  • Inactive cuts — sugars, starches, and inert fillers produce no reagent reaction
  • Levamisole in cocaine — this requires lab analysis
  • Fentanyl contamination — unless you use a fentanyl test strip specifically

How to Assess Potency at Home

Without laboratory equipment, the best you can do:

  1. Start with a fraction of a dose. If you normally take one pill, start with 1/4. Wait 90 minutes. Assess.
  2. Weigh powders with a milligram scale. Know how much you are taking. Do not eyeball.
  3. Use the same batch consistently. Once you know the potency of a batch, dose accordingly.
  4. If you get a new batch, start from the beginning. Assume it is different — because it probably is.

Laboratory Purity Testing

For actual purity quantification, laboratory analysis is required:
