The Cocaine Acetone Wash: The Only DIY Purification That Works
An acetone wash removes some cuts from cocaine, but it is not a purity test and it does not remove fentanyl. Here is how it works and its limits.
What an Acetone Wash Does
An acetone wash is a simple process that removes some of the cuts from cocaine. Cocaine does not dissolve in dry acetone, but many common cuts do. So you wash the powder with acetone, the cuts dissolve away, and the cocaine stays behind.
It is the one DIY purification that actually works, within limits. It is not magic, and it is not a purity test.
What It Removes
An acetone wash removes cuts that dissolve in acetone. Caffeine, some sugars, and certain fillers wash away.
It does not remove everything. Levamisole, one of the most common and most dangerous cuts, does not fully dissolve in acetone. So a washed sample can still contain levamisole.
What It Definitely Does Not Do
It does not remove fentanyl. This is the critical warning. Fentanyl contamination survives an acetone wash. If you wash a contaminated bag, the cocaine looks cleaner, but the fentanyl is still there.
Wash all you want, but you still need a fentanyl strip. The wash is about cuts, not safety.
The Basic Method
- Dry the acetone first. Water in acetone dissolves some of the cocaine, so you lose product. Use anhydrous acetone
- Mix the cocaine with cold acetone in a glass container
- Let the cuts dissolve, then pour off the liquid through a coffee filter
- Dry the powder that remains on the filter
This is a simplification. Do not attempt it without reading a full, careful method first, and understand the solvent is flammable.
The Honest Limits
An acetone wash can raise the apparent purity of a sample by removing some cuts. It does not make street cocaine safe. It does not remove fentanyl, levamisole, or everything else.
The smarter order is to test first, then decide. Fentanyl strip, reagent test, purity test. Only then think about washing.
