Cocaine Cuts: What's Really in Your Cocaine and How to Test for Adulterants

Street cocaine is rarely pure. From levamisole to fentanyl, here is exactly what cocaine is cut with, how to detect each adulterant, and the testing protocol that could save your life.

Cocaine Is Almost Never Pure

Multiple studies from drug checking services — including Canada's ANKORS, the UK's WEDINOS, and US-based DrugsData — consistently show that street cocaine is 20-50% pure on average. The remaining 50-80% is adulterants and diluents, some of which are medically dangerous.

The Most Common Cocaine Adulterants

Levamisole

  • What it is: A veterinary deworming agent
  • Prevalence: Found in 70-80% of cocaine samples tested in North America
  • Health risk: Causes agranulocytosis (destruction of white blood cells) and vasculitis — a condition where blood vessels become inflamed and skin tissue dies, leaving permanent purple-black lesions
  • Detection: Cannot be detected with standard reagents. Only lab analysis (GC-MS) can identify it.

Phenacetin

  • What it is: A banned analgesic (painkiller) withdrawn from the market due to kidney toxicity
  • Prevalence: Common in cocaine samples globally
  • Health risk: Chronic kidney damage, carcinogenic
  • Detection: No reagent test — requires lab analysis

Caffeine

  • What it is: The world's most common stimulant, used as a cheap bulking agent
  • Prevalence: Ubiquitous in cocaine samples
  • Health risk: Increases heart rate and blood pressure — adds stimulant load on top of cocaine
  • Detection: No specific reagent test; may produce faint reactions with some reagents

Lidocaine and Benzocaine

  • What it is: Local anesthetics that mimic cocaine's numbing effect
  • Prevalence: Very common — used to create the illusion of high-purity cocaine
  • Health risk: Generally low toxicity at typical amounts, but can mask dangerously pure cocaine by making weak product seem stronger
  • Detection: Difficult with reagents; Scott test may produce ambiguous results with benzocaine contamination

Fentanyl

  • What it is: A synthetic opioid 50x stronger than heroin
  • Prevalence: Increasing — documented in cocaine samples in Canada, the US, and Europe (2024-2025)
  • Health risk: Respiratory failure and death at sub-milligram doses. Fentanyl in cocaine is especially dangerous because cocaine users typically have no opioid tolerance.
  • Detection: Fentanyl test strips work well on cocaine — dissolve ~10mg in water and test

The Testing Protocol for Cocaine

Step 1: Scott Reagent (Cocaine Confirmatory)

Scott reagent turns blue in the presence of cocaine. This is the most important single test:

  • Blue = cocaine likely present
  • No blue = not cocaine, or cocaine is below detection threshold

However, Scott is not definitive — lidocaine and benzocaine can produce weak or transient blue reactions.

Step 2: Marquis Reagent (Adulterant Screen)

Marquis screens for amphetamine-type stimulants that may have been added:

  • No reaction = no amphetamine/methamphetamine contamination (good)
  • Orange/brown = amphetamine or methamphetamine present (not what you want in your cocaine)

Step 3: Mecke Reagent (Secondary Screen)

  • No reaction = consistent with cocaine
  • Green/blue reaction = possible MDMA or other contaminants

Step 4: Fentanyl Test Strip (Critical)

Dissolve approximately 10mg of cocaine in 1-2 teaspoons of water. Dip the strip for 15 seconds. Wait 2-5 minutes.

  • One line = fentanyl detected — DO NOT USE
  • Two lines = no fentanyl detected

Test the entire batch, not a sub-sample. Fentanyl does not distribute evenly in powder — the "chocolate chip cookie effect" means one portion may be clean while another contains a lethal dose.

What the Tests Cannot Tell You

  • Purity percentage — reagents only indicate presence/absence
  • Levamisole contamination — requires lab analysis
  • Which specific adulterant — reagents give class-level identification, not specific compound identification
