Testing DMT: Ehrlich and Hofmann for Tryptamines
DMT in vape cartridges is everywhere now. Here is how to test it with Ehrlich and Hofmann, and why two reagents beat one.
DMT Has Changed
DMT used to be a rare, ceremonial substance. Now it is common in vape cartridges, sold at festivals and online. That change makes testing more important, because a cartridge labeled DMT can contain almost anything.
Testing a cartridge is a little different from testing powder, but the reagents are the same.
Why Two Reagents
DMT belongs to the tryptamine family, along with psilocybin and other compounds. Ehrlich reagent reacts with all tryptamines and turns purple. That confirms you have a tryptamine, but not which one.
Hofmann reagent is the second test. It reacts differently with different tryptamines, which helps separate DMT from 5-MeO-DMT and other close relatives.
Ehrlich first, Hofmann second. Together they give a much stronger answer than either alone.
How to Test a Vape Cartridge
Cartridges are liquid, so you test the liquid, not powder.
- Put a small drop of the liquid on a white ceramic surface
- Add Ehrlich and watch for purple in the first couple of minutes
- Add Hofmann to a fresh drop and compare the reaction
- Run a fentanyl strip on a diluted sample of the liquid
A cartridge that shows no reaction with Ehrlich is not a tryptamine. Do not use it.
How to Test DMT Powder
For powder, the method is the standard one. A tiny sample on a white surface, one drop of reagent, and read the color at the right time.
What Testing Cannot Tell You
Testing cannot tell you the dose or concentration in a cartridge. It cannot tell you if the liquid contains a solvent or cutting agent. It confirms the substance family, not the strength.
Start low regardless of the result. A cartridge can be far stronger than expected.
