Ethylbromazolam: The New Designer Benzo

A benzodiazepine called ethylbromazolam was detected for the first time in Nova Scotia's unregulated supply. Here is what it is and why it matters.

A New Benzo, First Detection

In March 2026, CTV News reported that ethylbromazolam had been found for the first time in Nova Scotia's unregulated drug supply.

Ethylbromazolam is a designer benzodiazepine, a chemical in the same family as familiar drugs like alprazolam, but new enough that it is not caught by most routine testing.

Why Designer Benzos Matter

Benzodiazepines have become a major problem in the unregulated supply because they are cheap, easy to make, and often pressed into counterfeit pills sold as something else. Bromazolam, a close relative, has driven warning after warning across Canada.

TalkingDrugs called ethylbromazolam the new global benzodiazepine when it first appeared on radar in July 2025.

The Risk

Benzodiazepines slow the brain and body. In overdose they cause deep sedation and slowed breathing, and naloxone does not reverse them. Mixed with opioids, they make overdoses harder to treat.

Counterfeit pills sold as Xanax or other brands may contain a designer benzo like this, with a dose the buyer cannot know.

What You Can Do

If you use pills or powders that could contain a benzo, test them. Reagent tests can confirm a benzo class compound is present, though they cannot tell you which one or how strong.
