GHB/GBL Testing: How to Verify Your Dose Without Ending Up in the ER

The Narrowest Therapeutic Window

GHB and GBL have the narrowest dose window of any common recreational substance. The difference between a pleasant experience and a medical emergency is often half a milliliter. Combined with alcohol, which happens frequently, the risk of respiratory depression and coma spikes dramatically.

GHB vs GBL, Know the Difference

• GHB is a salt dissolved in water. It's typically 0.5-0.7g/mL concentration. Dose: 1.5-2.5g (about 2-3mL of standard solution).
• GBL is a solvent (industrial chemical) that the body converts to GHB. It's stronger, faster-acting, and the dose is smaller: 1-1.5mL typically. GBL is more toxic to mucous membranes and has a steeper dose-response curve.

Never assume the concentration. Home-produced GHB varies wildly in potency.

Testing GHB/GBL

pH testing: GHB should be pH 7-8 (slightly basic). GBL is acidic (pH 3-4). A pH strip can tell you which one you have. GHB that's strongly acidic may be contaminated with unreacted GBL.

Reagent testing:

• Marquis reagent, GHB/GBL produce no color change. That's actually useful, it rules out MDMA, amphetamines, and other substances.
• Fentanyl strip, test the liquid directly. Fentanyl-contaminated GHB has been documented. Test every batch.

The "gel test" myth: Some people say you can identify GHB by mixing it with water and seeing if it forms a gel. This is unreliable and dangerous. Don't rely on it.

Volumetric Dosing, The Only Safe Way

1. Use an oral syringe (1mL or 3mL, available at any pharmacy for ~$2)
2. Start with 1.5mL GHB or 1mL GBL as a test dose
3. Wait 2 full hours before re-dosing. GHB redosing is the #1 cause of overdose.
4. Set a timer. Do not guess. Do not trust how you feel, GHB hits suddenly.
5. Never combine with alcohol, benzos, or opioids. This is lethal.

Overdose Signs

• Vomiting while unconscious (aspiration risk, turn them on their side)
• Irregular or stopped breathing
• Unable to wake
• Blue lips/fingertips

GHB overdose does NOT respond to naloxone. Call 911 immediately. Recovery position. Monitor breathing.

Bottom Line

GHB is unforgiving. A $2 oral syringe and a $1 pH strip are the difference between informed use and a coma. Test every batch. Measure every dose.
