Hamilton Morris is an American journalist, chemist, documentary filmmaker, and harm reduction advocate. He is best known for creating and hosting Hamiltons Pharmacopeia, a documentary series that originally aired on VICE and later on Showtime, which stands as the most in-depth, scientifically rigorous, and genuinely curious exploration of psychoactive substances ever produced for television.

But for the harm reduction community, he is also the creator of the Morris reagent, one of the most important tools in the modern drug checking toolkit. Named after its inventor, the Morris reagent was specifically developed to address a critical gap in consumer reagent testing: the identification of ketamine and its increasingly common analogues.

Hamiltons Pharmacopeia: A New Standard for Drug Journalism

Before Hamiltons Pharmacopeia, drug documentaries fell into two categories: sensationalist "scare you straight" programming or light-touch pop culture pieces that avoided the science entirely. Morris created something entirely different.

Each episode of Hamiltons Pharmacopeia follows a meticulous structure:

  1. Historical research, Morris travels to the source, whether that means tracking down the original chemists who synthesized a compound in the 1950s, or visiting the indigenous communities where a plant medicine has been used for centuries.

The Morris Reagent: Solving a Real Problem

The Morris reagent was developed out of necessity. In the mid-2010s, as the RC (research chemical) market expanded rapidly, ketamine analogues like 2-FDCK, DCK, and 3-MeO-PCP began flooding the market. These compounds have vastly different potency and safety profiles from ketamine itself:

  • 2-FDCK: Approximately 2-3x less potent than ketamine, users dosing based on visual appearance could underdose
  • DCK: Approximately 5-10x more potent than ketamine, users could accidentally overdose
  • 3-MeO-PCP: A completely different dissociative with stimulant properties and a longer duration, associated with manic episodes and hospitalization

Existing reagents could not reliably distinguish these compounds. Mandelin reagent produces an orange color with ketamine but also reacts with many other substances. Marquis and Mecke produce no useful reaction with most dissociatives.

Morris developed his reagent specifically to solve this problem. The Morris reagent produces a deep purple to blue color in the presence of ketamine, while producing different, or no, color reactions with common analogues. It is now considered the standard reagent for dissociative identification and is included in most comprehensive test kits.

Why Hamilton Morris Matters for Harm Reduction

Morris's contributions extend far beyond the reagent that bears his name. His approach to drug journalism has fundamentally changed how the public, and other journalists, think about psychoactive substances:

1. Science first, stigma nowhere. Morris treats psychoactive compounds as objects of legitimate scientific inquiry, not as moral panics or entertainment. He interviews pharmacologists, ethnobotanists, and toxicologists with the same respect that traditional journalists reserve for politicians and CEOs.

2. Transparency about risk. Unlike both legalization advocates who downplay risks and prohibitionists who exaggerate them, Morris presents risk honestly. His episode on the synthetic cannabinoid 5F-ADB, which caused a mass casualty event in New York, is a case study in responsible risk communication.

3. Elevating harm reduction. Every episode of Hamiltons Pharmacopeia includes practical harm reduction information, how to test substances, where to find reagent kits, what to do in an emergency. This is not presented as a separate segment but woven naturally into the narrative.
