How to Test Methamphetamine: Complete Reagent Identification Guide
Street methamphetamine is frequently cut with MSM, levamisole, DMSO, and other adulterants. Some pressed pills sold as meth are actually bath salts (synthetic cathinones) with very different safety profiles. Here is the complete multi-reagent protocol for identifying methamphetamine.
Why Methamphetamine Requires Multiple Reagents
Methamphetamine is one of the most commonly adulterated substances on the illicit market. Unlike cannabis or psilocybin mushrooms, where the primary risk is misidentification, methamphetamine's risks come from both adulteration and from substitution with more dangerous compounds.
Common adulterants in street meth include:
- MSM (methylsulfonylmethane): A dietary supplement that mimics the crystalline appearance of meth
- Levamisole: A veterinary dewormer that causes agranulocytosis (destruction of white blood cells)
- DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide): A solvent that can carry other adulterants through the skin
- Caffeine: A common but dangerous addition at high doses
- Synthetic cathinones (bath salts): Sold AS meth in pressed pill form, entirely different compound with severe psychosis risks
A single reagent test can confirm the presence of an amphetamine-class compound. But telling methamphetamine apart from regular amphetamine, or from synthetic cathinones, requires a multi-reagent protocol.
The Three-Reagent Protocol

Step 1: Marquis Reagent
Marquis reagent turns orange to red-brown in the presence of methamphetamine. This is your first screening test. If Marquis does NOT produce an orange-to-brown color change, you likely have something other than an amphetamine-class substance.
However, Marquis alone cannot distinguish methamphetamine from:
- Regular amphetamine (Adderall)
- MDMA (which turns purple-black, very different color, but some users confuse it)
- Synthetic cathinones (which can produce a variety of colors)
Step 2: Simon's Reagent, The Critical Differentiator
Simon's reagent is what separates methamphetamine from amphetamine. The chemistry:
- Methamphetamine is a secondary amine, it has a methyl group (CH₃) attached to the nitrogen atom. Simon's reagent reacts with secondary amines to produce a bright blue color.
- Amphetamine is a primary amine, no methyl group on the nitrogen. Simon's reagent does NOT react. No color change = regular amphetamine.
This is the single most important distinction for harm reduction. Amphetamine (Adderall, speed) has a significantly different safety profile, dosing, and duration than methamphetamine. Mistaking one for the other can lead to dangerous dosing errors.
Step 3: Mecke Reagent
Mecke reagent produces no significant color change with methamphetamine or amphetamine (pale yellow or no reaction). Its primary value is ruling out MDMA (which turns green to dark blue/black with Mecke) and identifying certain adulterants.
Identifying Common Adulterants
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM is a white crystalline powder that looks identical to methamphetamine. It produces NO reaction with Marquis, Simon's, or Mecke reagents, which is itself the tell. If your sample looks like meth but produces no color change with any reagent, you have MSM or another inert adulterant.
Levamisole
Levamisole reacts with Marquis to produce a distinctive orange-red color, similar to methamphetamine itself, making it difficult to detect when mixed. Liebermann reagent can help: levamisole turns dark brown/black with Liebermann, while methamphetamine does not produce this reaction.
Caffeine
Caffeine produces NO reaction with Marquis, but can be detected with the Scott reagent (originally designed for cocaine), caffeine turns blue/purple. If your sample tests positive for meth with Marquis and also produces an unexpected Scott reagent reaction, caffeine may be present.
Warning: Synthetic Cathinones ("Bath Salts")
Pressed pills sold as methamphetamine, particularly in party settings, are increasingly found to contain synthetic cathinones like MDPV, methylone, or alpha-PVP ("flakka"). These compounds have vastly different safety profiles:
- MDPV: Can cause psychosis, aggression, and cardiovascular complications at doses as low as 5-10 mg
- Alpha-PVP: Associated with extreme agitation, hyperthermia, and excited delirium syndrome
- Methylone: Safer profile than MDPV but still distinct from methamphetamine
Simon's reagent is again your best tool here: most synthetic cathinones are primary amines and will NOT produce the blue color that methamphetamine does. If Marquis produces a positive (orange) result but Simon's does NOT turn blue, you likely have an adulterant or a different stimulant entirely.
