Nitazenes in Europe: The 2026 Warning Cycle

The EU drug agency, UNODC, and UK media all issued 2026 warnings on nitazenes, and a new compound was detected for the first time. Here is the state of play.

The Synthetic Opioid Story of 2026

Nitazenes and a related class called orphines are the dominant synthetic opioid story in Europe this year. The warnings are coming from every level, from the European Union down to local health services.

What the Agencies Are Saying

In June 2026, the EU drug agency warned that dangerous synthetic opioids in the nitazene class had been found in counterfeit and fake medicines. Politico Europe carried the warning.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reported in February 2026 that nitazene and orphine analogues were increasing, and it flagged the implications for test strips, which do not all detect these newer compounds.

The Guardian reported in February 2026 that synthetic opioids may have caused hundreds more deaths in the UK than official figures showed. The gap comes from the limits of routine testing, which often does not look for these newer drugs.

A New Compound, First Detection

In January 2026, researchers reported the first detection of a compound called 5-cyano isotodesnitazene in illicit street drugs, published in Nature. It is one more sign that the nitazene family keeps expanding faster than testing can keep up.

What This Means for Testing

A standard fentanyl strip does not reliably detect nitazenes. If you use opioids, or any powder or pill that could contain them, you need a nitazene strip too, and even then no strip covers every new analogue.
