How to Read a Reagent Color Chart Without Getting It Wrong

Why Color Charts Confuse People
A reagent color chart looks simple. Drop a reagent on a sample, compare the color, and you know what you have. In practice, it is easy to get it wrong. Timing, surface, and lighting all change the color you see.
This guide walks through how to read a chart correctly, so you do not talk yourself into a wrong answer.
Read at the Right Time
Every reagent has a window. Marquis, for example, usually shows its meaningful color in the first 30 seconds to one minute. After that, the reaction keeps darkening, and a late reading can look like a different substance entirely.
The rule is simple. Read the color when the chart tells you to, not when you get around to it. Most charts are printed with a specific timing note. Follow it.
A White Ceramic Surface
Reagent drops look different on glass, plastic, or paper. A white ceramic plate or a white glazed dish is the standard. It gives a clean background and does not react with the reagent.
Put a small amount of powder on the plate. Then add one drop of reagent and watch the color form right next to the sample. Do not put the drop directly on top and stare at the blob. You want to see the color at the edge where reagent meets sample.
White Light, Not Warm Light
Yellow or dim room light shifts every color. Purple looks darker, orange looks brown, and you can easily misread a result. Use daylight or a bright white LED.
If you have to choose between two colors and you are not sure, the honest answer is that you do not know. That is not a failure. That is the test working.

This is a shortcut, not a full chart. Always check the full chart for your reagent. And never trust a single reagent alone. One color is a hint. Two or three agreeing colors are a result.

When the Color Does Not Match
If your result does not match anything on the chart, do not take the substance. A no reaction, a weird color, or a color that does not fit any row means the sample is not what you expected. That is the whole point of testing. The test did its job.
