The Four Enemies of Reagents
1. Heat
Heat accelerates chemical degradation exponentially. Every 10°C increase roughly doubles the rate of degradation.
Best practice: Store reagents in a refrigerator at 2-8°C (36-46°F). Do not freeze — freezing can cause the glass ampoule or bottle to crack and will alter the reagent chemistry.
2. Light
Ultraviolet light breaks down many of the active compounds in reagent solutions — particularly sulfuric acid-based reagents like Marquis and Mecke.
Best practice: Keep reagents in their original amber glass bottles. These are specifically designed to block UV light. Do not transfer reagents to clear containers.
3. Oxygen
Exposure to air oxidizes reagent chemicals, reducing potency and altering color reactions.
Best practice: Replace the cap immediately after each use. Tighten securely. The less time the bottle spends open, the longer it lasts.
4. Contamination
Introducing foreign material into the reagent bottle — even microscopic amounts — can catalyze degradation or alter the reagent's chemistry permanently.

How to Tell If a Reagent Has Gone Bad
Visual Inspection
- Fresh Marquis: Clear to very pale yellow
- Degraded Marquis: Dark amber, brown, or orange
- Fresh Mecke: Clear
- Degraded Mecke: Yellow, brown, or cloudy
- Fresh Mandelin: Clear to very pale yellow
- Degraded Mandelin: Dark yellow, orange, or cloudy
- Fresh Ehrlich: Clear to very pale yellow
- Degraded Ehrlich: Dark yellow, brown, or cloudy
If your reagent has changed color significantly from when it was new, it is likely degraded.
Functional Test
Test the reagent on a known substance:
- Marquis on aspirin (from a pharmacy): should turn pink/red within seconds
- Ehrlich on melatonin (from a pharmacy): should turn purple within 2-5 minutes
- If the reaction is weak, slow, or the wrong color, the reagent is degraded
Storage Protocol
- Refrigerate at 2-8°C. A dedicated mini-fridge or a sealed container in the main fridge (away from food) is ideal.
- Keep in original amber bottles. Never transfer to different containers.
- Label the opening date with a permanent marker on the bottle or cap.
- Set a calendar reminder for 12 months from opening — this is when you should consider replacement.
- Inspect before each use. If the color looks off, test it on a known substance before trusting it on an unknown.
Traveling with Reagents
Reagents are corrosive acids in glass bottles. Transport them:
- In their original bottles with caps tightly secured
