Summer Festival Safety Guide 2026: Drug Checking, Hydration, and What's New This Year
The drug supply has changed since last festival season. Nitazenes are appearing in cocaine and MDMA, xylazine has reached Europe, and more festivals now offer on-site spectrometry. Essential safety guide for summer 2026.
The Drug Supply Has Changed
Testing for fentanyl alone is no longer sufficient. Nitazenes have been detected in stimulant samples at European festivals. Xylazine has spread beyond North America. Medetomidine is emerging in North America. Standard fentanyl strips miss all three.
Minimum Festival Testing Kit
Fentanyl strips, BTNX Fentanyl + Nitazene dual strips, xylazine strips (if using opioids). Reagents: Marquis, Simon's, Morris, Ehrlich. White testing plate, micro scoop, LED flashlight.
On-Site Drug Checking
Shambhala (ANKORS): FTIR + reagent + strips. Boomtown/Glastonbury (The Loop): FTIR. Electric Forest (DanceSafe): Reagents. Burning Man (Zendo): Peer support. Use on-site spectrometry when available.
Hydration
MDMA + heat + exertion is dangerous. Drink 500-750 mL water/hour. Alternate with electrolytes. Take shade breaks. Watch for overheating signs: confusion, nausea, no sweating.
Naloxone
Carry 2-4 doses. Fentanyl and nitazenes are found in stimulants. Naloxone won't harm if opioids aren't present. Many festivals offer free naloxone.
