Superlab Raids: The Global Meth and Fentanyl Picture

Mexican cartels are outsourcing meth labs to Nigeria and South Africa, while big labs fall in Canada and the US. A recap of 2025 and 2026 raids.

The New Superlab Map

The superlab story used to be simple. Meth and fentanyl were made in Mexico or China, then shipped out. In 2025 and 2026, the map has changed in a striking way.

Cartels Outsourcing Production

The BBC reported in July 2026 that Mexican drug cartels have outsourced meth labs to Nigeria. Al Jazeera reported in June 2026 that cartels had turned South African farms into meth production hubs.

This is a real shift. Instead of shipping finished product across oceans, cartels are moving production closer to some markets and using local chemistry.

Big Busts in North America

The raids at home keep coming too.

In April 2026, the CBC reported that almost 40 kilograms of fentanyl and analogues were seized at a lab in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

In February 2026, Georgia police confiscated 983 pounds of meth in one of the state's largest busts, ABC News reported. The same month, The Bureau published an investigation into the road from Vancouver to what it called the world's largest fentanyl superlab.

Earlier, in October 2025, the RCMP busted an industrial scale superlab outside Toronto.

Mexico: Still the Center

Inside Mexico, the raids continue. CBS reported in March 2026 that 14 million doses of fentanyl were seized from a secret lab, and in February 2026 that over 5,000 pounds of meth were taken in a raid on a hidden lab.

What It Means

The supply keeps industrializing, and the production keeps spreading. For users, that means less predictability about what is in a bag, and more reason to test everything. For the deeper history of the trade, see our Golden Triangle guide.
