Festivals are increasingly adopting testing services as evidence shows they reduce hospital admissions by up to 95% at participating events.

What Testing at a Festival Actually Looks Like

1. You visit the testing tent (usually clearly marked, near welfare/medical areas)
2. You provide a tiny sample — literally a scrape, a few milligrams
3. You wait 20-30 minutes while the sample is analyzed
4. A trained healthcare professional gives you the results and discusses what they mean
5. No personal information is recorded. No police are involved. The service is confidential.

The results are for your information. Testing staff will never confiscate substances or report you. Their job is harm reduction — giving you accurate information so you can make informed decisions.

What to Bring to a UK Festival

Testing Kit

If the festival does not offer on-site testing — or if you want to test before you arrive — bring:

• Marquis reagent (screens for MDMA, amphetamine, and many adulterants)
• Mecke reagent (confirms MDMA vs PMA/PMMA)
• Mandelin reagent (identifies ketamine vs analogs)

What to Avoid

Mixing Substances

Alcohol plus MDMA, cocaine plus ketamine, GHB plus anything — polydrug use dramatically increases risk. The single biggest predictor of drug-related medical incidents at festivals is combining multiple substances.

Redosing Too Soon

MDMA redoses within 2-3 hours provide minimal additional benefit and significantly increase neurotoxicity and hyperthermia risk. If you take MDMA, plan your dose and stick to it. More is not better — it is just more dangerous.

Unknown Pills

UK pill presses vary enormously in MDMA content — from 50mg to over 300mg in a single tablet. A pill that looks identical to one you have taken before could contain triple the dose. Testing is the only way to know.

Dehydration and Overheating

MDMA, amphetamines, and cocaine all raise body temperature and impair the body's ability to regulate it. At a festival in summer:

• Drink water consistently, not all at once (250-500ml per hour in hot conditions)

Police Presence

Police operate at every major UK festival. Their approach varies by event and by force, but expect:

• Drug detection dogs at entry gates (they screen bags, not people directly — but they are accurate)
• Plainclothes officers inside the venue
• Amnesty bins at entry — you can dispose of substances before a search without penalty
• Searches at entry and within the venue

If You Are Caught

• Possession of any illegal drug is a criminal offense
• First-time possession typically results in a warning, caution, or fine — but prosecution is possible
• Supply charges are far more serious. Sharing drugs with a friend can legally be "supply" — do not share substances
• You have the right to remain silent. Ask for a solicitor if questioned
• Festival welfare services (medical tent, The Loop, harm reduction teams) are not police and will not report you

Do not panic if you or a friend needs medical help. UK festivals have medical teams on site. Getting help for someone who is unwell is more important than any legal concern. Medical staff are there to help, not to judge.

After the Festival

• Reflect on what you learned. If your substance was not what you expected, that is information worth sharing with your community
