Nitazenes: The Synthetic Opioids Stronger Than Fentanyl, What They Are and How to Test

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids roughly 1.5-20x more potent than fentanyl (some analogues up to 100x more potent than morphine), increasingly found in the global drug supply. Learn what they are, why they're dangerous, and how to test for them.

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids that were first developed in the 1950s as potential painkillers. They were never approved for medical use because they were too potent and carried too much risk. For decades they stayed in academic literature. Then, around 2019-2020, drug checking services started finding them in the unregulated opioid supply.

They're not fentanyl analogues. Nitazenes belong to a separate chemical class (2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids), but they bind to the same mu-opioid receptors with even greater affinity.

Nitazene analogues are among the most potent opioids ever synthesized. A dose measured in micrograms, not milligrams, can cause respiratory arrest.

Where They're Showing Up

Nitazenes have been detected in:

  • Heroin and fentanyl powder (mixed in or substituted entirely)
  • Pressed counterfeit pills sold as oxycodone, Xanax, or Percocet
  • Cocaine (cross-contamination during cutting or packaging)
  • MDMA (less common, but documented by European testing services)

They are almost never taken intentionally. Most nitazene exposures happen when someone believes they're using a completely different substance.

Testing for Nitazenes

Standard fentanyl test strips do not detect nitazenes. The chemical structures are different enough that the immunoassay antibodies used in fentanyl strips don't bind to nitazene analogues.

You need nitazene-specific test strips ($15.00 for 10). They use the same lateral flow technology as fentanyl strips, but the antibodies target the nitazene molecular structure.

The protocol is the same:

  1. Dissolve about 10mg of sample in buffer solution
  2. Dip the strip with arrows pointing down
  3. Wait 5 minutes
  4. One line = nitazene detected. Two lines = not detected.

Why This Matters Right Now

Nitazene contamination is being tracked by multiple monitoring systems:

  • EMCDDA, early warning system reports on new analogues appearing in Europe
  • DEA, lab data showing increasing detection in seized drugs
  • Canadian drug checking services, Vancouver's supervised consumption sites report periodic nitazene detection

These aren't rare events. If you're using opioids or cocaine in 2026, a nitazene strip belongs in the same kit as your fentanyl strips.
