What Are Nitazenes?

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids developed in the 1950s as potential painkillers — they were never approved for medical use because they were too potent and dangerous. Today they are manufactured illicitly and increasingly detected in the North American and European drug supply.

They are not fentanyl analogs. Nitazenes belong to a separate chemical class (2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids) but bind to the same mu-opioid receptors with extreme affinity.

Nitazene analogues are among the most potent opioids ever synthesized. A dose measured in micrograms — not milligrams — can cause respiratory arrest.

Why Are They in the Drug Supply?

Nitazenes have been detected in:

  • Heroin and fentanyl powder (as an adulterant or substitute)
  • Pressed counterfeit pills sold as oxycodone, Xanax, or Percocet
  • Cocaine (cross-contamination during cutting or packaging)
  • MDMA (rare but documented in European testing services)

They are almost never taken intentionally. Most nitazene exposures happen when someone believes they are using a different drug.

How to Test for Nitazenes

Standard fentanyl test strips do NOT detect nitazenes. The chemical structure is different enough that the immunoassay antibodies used in fentanyl strips do not bind to nitazene analogues.

You need nitazene-specific test strips for detection.
