How to Test MDMA Safely: A Complete Reagent Guide

Learn which reagents confirm MDMA, how to rule out PMA/PMMA, and why at least three reagents are needed for definitive identification.

Why Testing MDMA Is Critical

MDMA is one of the most commonly used recreational substances worldwide, but it's also one of the most frequently adulterated. PMA and PMMA — toxic compounds sold as "ecstasy" — have been responsible for numerous fatalities. The only way to know what's in your substance is to test it.

The Three-Reagent Rule

A single reagent test is never enough. Different compounds can produce similar color reactions, leading to dangerous misidentification. For MDMA, the minimum testing protocol uses three reagents.

Reagent 1: Marquis

Marquis reagent reacts with MDMA by producing an immediate deep purple/black color shift. This confirms the presence of MDxx compounds. If Marquis produces yellow/orange instead, you're likely looking at a cathinone ("bath salt"). No reaction at all? The substance contains no MDMA.

Reagent 2: Simon's

Simon's reagent reacts specifically with secondary amines. MDMA is a secondary amine and will produce a bright blue reaction. MDA — a primary amine — produces no reaction. This is how you tell the difference between the two. Simon's also reacts with methamphetamine (secondary amine) but not amphetamine (primary amine).

Reagent 3: Froehde

Froehde reagent provides a third confirmation point and is excellent at detecting cathinones. With MDMA, Froehde produces a greenish-black to blue-black color. This reagent is particularly useful because it catches synthetic cathinones that Marquis alone might misidentify.

Testing Procedure

  1. Scrape a tiny amount of powder — about the size of a grain of salt (2-5mg)
  2. Place on a clean white ceramic surface (a testing tray works best)
  3. Add one drop of Marquis reagent
  4. Observe the color change within the first 30 seconds
  5. Repeat with Simon's and Froehde on fresh samples
  6. Compare against the included color chart

Common Adulterants Found in MDMA

  • PMA/PMMA: Extremely toxic, slow onset leading to double-dosing. Marquis turns orange/brown.
  • Cathinones (bath salts): Stimulants sold as molly. Variable reactions.
  • Caffeine: Common filler, no reaction with reagents.
  • Methamphetamine: Simon's turns blue (same as MDMA), which is why Marquis + Froehde confirmation is essential.
