Testing at Festivals and Events: Building a Portable Harm Reduction Kit

Festivals concentrate a lot of variables in one place, unfamiliar sources, heat, crowds, and limited access to services. Having your own testing kit takes up almost no space and removes one major unknown from the equation.

Here's what to pack, organized by priority.

What to Bring

• Xylazine test strips. Xylazine is appearing beyond just the opioid supply now.
• A small flashlight or phone light. Reading color changes in festival lighting is genuinely difficult without proper illumination.

• Froehde reagent. Third-point confirmation for MDMA and cathinone detection.
• Morris reagent. For ketamine testing, which is common at festivals.
• Extra testing vials and scoops. You may want to run multiple tests across different days.

Testing Discreetly

Festival security policies vary. Some events explicitly allow testing supplies; others don't. Here's what's worked for people:

1. Pack reagents in your toiletries bag. Amber glass bottles in a ziplock look like essential oils or skincare.
2. Use a festival locker. Many events offer lockers. Stash your kit and test at your campsite.
3. Test before entering. Run your tests at camp or in your car before heading into the festival grounds. It's the least-pressure environment.
4. Use on-site services if available. Some festivals (particularly in Europe, Australia, and Canada) have professional drug checking. Those services are free and more accurate than home kits.

Beyond Testing
