How to Test MDMA Safely: A Complete Reagent Guide
Learn which reagents confirm MDMA, how to rule out PMA/PMMA, and why at least three reagents are needed for definitive identification.
MDMA is one of the most widely used substances out there, and it's also one of the most frequently adulterated. PMA and PMMA, toxic compounds sold as ecstasy, have been responsible for numerous fatalities over the years. Testing is the only reliable way to know what you're actually dealing with.
The Three-Reagent Approach
A single reagent test gives you part of the picture, but different substances can produce similar color changes, and that kind of confusion is exactly what we're trying to avoid. For MDMA, the minimum protocol uses three reagents.
Marquis, First Check
Marquis reagent reacts with MDMA by producing an immediate deep purple-black color shift. That confirms you're in the MDxx family. If Marquis turns yellow-orange instead, you're likely looking at a cathinone. No reaction at all? There's no MDMA in this sample.
Simon's, MDMA vs MDA
Simon's reagent targets secondary amines specifically. MDMA is a secondary amine, so it produces that bright blue reaction we're looking for. MDA is a primary amine, no reaction. That's how we tell them apart. Simon's also reacts with methamphetamine (secondary amine) but not amphetamine (primary amine).
Froehde, Third Confirmation
Froehde reagent provides a third data point and is particularly good at catching cathinones that Marquis alone might miss. With MDMA, Froehde produces a greenish-black to blue-black color.
How to Run the Test
- Scrape a tiny amount, about the size of a grain of salt (2-5mg)
- Place it on a clean white ceramic surface (a testing tray works well)
- Add one drop of Marquis
- Read the color within the first 30 seconds
- Repeat with Simon's and Froehde on fresh samples
- Compare against a color chart
Common Adulterants Found in MDMA
- PMA/PMMA: Extremely toxic. Slow onset leads people to double-dose. Marquis turns orange-brown.
- Cathinones (bath salts): Stimulants sold as molly. Variable reactions.
- Caffeine: Common filler. No reaction with reagents.
- Methamphetamine: Simon's turns blue (same as MDMA), which is why Marquis and Froehde confirmation are essential.
