The Main Adulterants and What They Do
Levamisole
Originally a veterinary dewormer, levamisole is the most common cocaine adulterant found in North America, historically reported in an estimated 70-80% of seized samples in some regions (2010s data), though recent DEA data (CY2024) found it in only ~2% of seized domestic samples, so prevalence varies by region and year. It suppresses the immune system, can cause dangerously low white blood cell counts (agranulocytosis), and has been linked to necrotic skin lesions. Liebermann reagent picks it up with a distinctive olive-green reaction.
Local Anesthetics (Benzocaine, Lidocaine, Procaine)
These numb the gums and mimic one of cocaine's recognizable effects. They're generally less toxic than levamisole but can cause allergic reactions and, at high enough doses, methemoglobinemia where blood can't carry oxygen effectively. Marquis shows no reaction with lidocaine specifically.
Amphetamine and Methamphetamine
Added to boost perceived potency. The problem is they come with significantly different cardiovascular strain and duration than cocaine, making it easy to misjudge redosing. Marquis turns orange/brown for amphetamine and orange/red-brown for methamphetamine.
Caffeine
The most common filler, looks similar, mild stimulant effect, cheap. Low acute risk but contributes to anxiety and palpitations. Most reagents show minimal reaction to pure caffeine.
Fentanyl
Less common in cocaine than in opioids, but when it's there the consequences are catastrophic. A few dollars worth of fentanyl test strips is the only reliable way to check. Even if you trust your source, dealers often use shared surfaces and scales.
Testing Protocol
Step 1: Reagent Check
Start with Liebermann and Marquis. Cocaine HCl produces a clear yellow/amber with Liebermann and a very faint pink with Marquis. Unexpected colors mean adulterants are present.
Step 2: Adulterant Screening
